Marylebone started life as a medieval village. It took its name from the parish church St Mary’s (now known as St Marylebone Parish Church), and the local stream – or “bourne” – that used to run down what is now Marylebone Lane.
The area is dominated by two families estates – the Portman Estate and the Howard de Walden Estate - who own large chunks of the area, including the High Street.
Quirky Fact-box:
- It has the highest concentration of Georgian housing in London
- Regent’s Park is the busiest royal park in London
- Marylebone is the most commonly misspelt name in London
- Sienna Miller, Noel Gallagher and Madonna all own houses here
- Famous past residents include Sherlock Holmes, Charles Dickens, John Lennon and Jimi Hendrix
Places of interest:

- St Marylebone Parish Church
